Great leaders know how to motivate others. Since the amount you can accomplish on your own is limited, it’s necessary to have the assistance of others. Someone that can motivate others to do their best has an incredibly valuable talent. When you can inspire others, you can accomplish much more.

- Be emotionally supportive. Remove the fear of failing or looking foolish. Most people are frozen by fear and prefer comfort. When fear is greater than motivation, nothing happens. Removing fear can be as effective as adding motivation.
- Provide additional support. Ask what resources are required. Maybe it’s extra help, funds, or simply a listening ear. Determine what’s needed for success—and provide it.
- Follow up regularly. Show you care by checking in. Ask questions, listen, and keep folks on track.
- Be publically supportive. Support in private is nice, but do it in public too. People remember how you back them up in front of others.
- Acknowledge and reward. Regularly recognize progress and effort, publicly. Praise in public, handle discipline in private.
- Ask for ideas. People get excited about their own ideas. Use them! This builds buy-in and engagement.
- Be clear. Vagueness breeds confusion and kills motivation. When objectives and steps are clear, people can focus on achieving them.
- Set a good example. If it matters to you, show it by your actions. Model the behavior and priorities you want to see in others.
- Create a vision. Paint a vivid picture of the end result. Remind everyone why their work matters and where it leads.
- Deal swiftly with dissenters. One negative voice can bring down the group. Address issues directly and quickly to maintain momentum.
Motivation isn’t just about adding positivity; it’s about removing obstacles. Encourage opinions, but once a decision’s made, expect the team to move forward together.
Motivating others is a skill you can develop. Your success will always be tied to your team’s performance. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can do it all solo—great leaders inspire greatness in others.
