We all have a purpose. A life without purpose is just existing and not living. The name Theodore is of Greek origin meaning “gift of God.” I cannot say I have been a gift to many at this stage of life, but it is an honor to have such a powerful statement as a first name. My nickname has been Teddy since I can remember, and I have always solely gone by Teddy as a primary name. Growing up, many of my friends received nicknames throughout life that were a lot more tough and street-ready than Teddy. At some point in time, while we would jokingly give each other tough nicknames as a sign of endearment like Big Dog, Hatched Head, Killer Graham, OJ, Big Blank, and so on, I was still just Teddy. Nothing extraordinary about a soft, cuddly Teddy, especially in a tough town like the one I grew up in. One of my peers jokingly said, “We have to give Teddy a tough nickname,” and everyone laughed, but not a laugh of endearment. It was more like a joke. Thus started the search for Teddy’s tough nickname but not really. The jokes rang heavy and loud as we ended on Teddy Bear, and everyone laughed and was so amused. Later it became just Bear by the end of this joke section. I embraced all variations because my mind was always simply somewhere else other than Ferriday, Louisiana, where my body was trapped for the moment.

You see, when you grow up in poverty, many times you are the butt of many jokes, even amongst others growing in that same environment. You can either fight every meaningless battle or you can ignore and look for a better moment to redeem yourself. For me, I learned early in life that I had anger issues that could be triggered easily, and as kids, many times your friends find out your trigger. So, my response most of the time was to try to hide my instant anger and inner aggression. My last name, Schiele, is a Westphalian-German nickname. Such surnames were very common in Westphalia. They were adapted from traditional eke-names, or added names, that described physical characteristics of their bearers. Schiele is a hereditary surname for a person who was either wild or clamorous. The name was originally derived from the German word “schel,” which means “noisy” or “loud.” With this being said, I see myself as a person unafraid to use my gift from God to be loud and expressive.

Theresia Schiele, who landed in North America in 1851, was one of the earliest Schieles to enter the United States. So, for me, I know that the importance of growth is about knowing oneself and where you come from. The greatest man in my life ever is my dad. When I decided to dedicate my life to being a motivational speaker and consultant, it was with my dad in mind. A strong man who dedicated his life to God and giving in the name of his church and family.
